Chinese Date is a small deciduous tree. It has glossy green leaves and oval-shaped fruit which become dark brown when ripe.

Chinese date grows well in warm, dry climates, but can tolerate cold winters (as low as -29 C.) Growing jujube trees is relatively easy. Jujube grows best in planted in full sun and sandy, well-drained soil. They are not particular about soil pH.

Apart from being a very popular food with a whole variety of culinary uses, the fruit and seeds are used in Chinese and Korean traditional medicine. They will do best in a warm, sunny location in sandy, well-drained soil.

Harvesting Chinese Date Fruit

It is very easy when it comes times for harvesting Jujube. When the fruit has turned dark brown, it will be ready to harvest but the fruits can be left on the tree until it fully dries. The fruit should be firm to the touch.

When picking the Jujube fruit, cut the stem, rather than pulling them from the tree. The fruit is best stored in a cool place between 11 – 13 C in a green fruit bag or, if they are completely dry, in an airtight container.
