Kowhai seeds harvested in 2020. Kowhai (Sophora microphylla) is a very attractive tree native to New Zealand. It grows up to 10m tall and has beautiful golden yellow flowers which appear in spring. The nectar is a favourite food of tui, kereru and korimako and attracts many lovely birds. Tui are very attracted to Kowhai and will fly long distances to get a sip of its nectar. Kowhai wood is strong and very dense and has been used in the past for machinery and tools. In the past the flowers were a source of yellow dye.

Kowhai grows well in a range of soils, is frost tender when young and frost hardy when mature. These seeds were harvested this season from a very large and beautiful tree.
