Description
Astragalus
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)- Seeds.
Astragalus (also known as Milk Vetch and Huang Qi) is a hardy perennial herb traditionally used in Chinese herbalism, known for its delicate, fern-like foliage and small yellow flowers. Native to northern and eastern Asia, it prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and can be grown as a long-lived feature in herb or permaculture gardens.
This resilient legume has been prized for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, where its roots have been used to support overall vitality and natural resilience. Though not commonly used fresh, the roots are typically harvested in the plant’s second or third year, then dried for use in teas, decoctions, or herbal preparations.
Astragalus is also a nitrogen fixer, making it a valuable addition to soil health in mixed garden beds.
