Damar Gum / Damar Resin – Natural

Pure, high-quality Damar Gum resin, also known as Dammar Gum or Dammar Resin. Damar is a natural tree resin obtained from trees belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family, native to parts of India and Southeast Asia.

Damar Gum is usually collected by tapping the trees, although fossilised forms can also be found naturally on the ground. The resin can range in colour from clear to pale yellow, while fossilised Damar is generally grey-brown.

Uses of Damar Gum

Damar Gum is a versatile natural resin with a long history of use in artistic, craft and other applications. It is commonly used in:

Oil Painting

Damar Gum has traditionally been used to make picture varnish for oil paintings. The resin can be dissolved in gum turpentine to produce a clear varnish that can be applied to finished paintings.

Damar varnish has also been used during the painting process to provide a glossy surface between layers. The consistency can be adjusted by altering the amount of turpentine used.

Note: Damar Gum is soluble in gum turpentine but not mineral turpentine.

Beeswax Wraps

Damar Gum is used as an ingredient in some homemade beeswax wrap recipes. It can be combined with beeswax and jojoba oil to create a coating for fabric.

Encaustic Painting

Damar resin can be added to beeswax for encaustic painting. It is commonly used to increase the hardness and durability of the wax and can also help create a smoother, glossier finish.

Damar resin is added directly to the wax and melted together before pigments are incorporated. The proportion of Damar can be adjusted according to the desired result.
