The whole plant, especially the leaves and roots, are filled with mucilage which is very soothing to the mucous membranes of the digestive tract. Marshmallow root and leaves are traditionally used to help support a healthy digestive tract. The leaves can be applied topically as a poultice for insect bites, and the leaves and roots are a great ingredient in ointments for chapped and itchy skin.
