Roselle is a warm-weather plant that enjoys plenty of sunlight and fertile, well-drained soil. With the right growing conditions, it can produce an abundant harvest of colourful calyces towards the end of the growing season.
Growing Roselle
Roselle grows best in warm conditions and needs plenty of sunlight. Choose a sunny position that receives around 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
The plant prefers fertile, well-drained soil. It can grow in a range of soil types, although slightly acidic to neutral soil generally suits it well.
Planting Roselle Seeds
In warm climates, you can sow Roselle Seeds directly into the garden once the soil has warmed and the risk of frost has passed.
For cooler climates, start the seeds indoors about 8–10 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow the seeds in small pots or seedling trays filled with good-quality, well-drained potting mix. Keep them somewhere warm and sunny while they develop.
Plant the seeds about 2–2.5 cm deep. Once the seedlings are well established and the weather has warmed, gradually acclimatise them before planting outdoors.
Allow plenty of space between plants. Roselle can grow into a large, bushy plant, so around 90 cm between plants gives them room to develop. If planting in rows, allow additional space between rows for good air circulation and easy access.
Caring for Roselle
Roselle needs regular water, particularly during hot or dry weather. Keep the soil reasonably moist, but avoid waterlogging. A layer of mulch around the plants can help retain moisture and reduce weed growth.
The plants also benefit from regular feeding during the growing season. Use a balanced fertiliser according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
For bushier growth, pinch out the growing tips once the plants become established. This encourages branching and can help produce more flowering growth and calyces.
Roselle is sensitive to cold and frost. Therefore, gardeners in cooler regions should provide as much warmth and shelter as possible. Planting near a sunny wall or growing the plant in a large container can help create a warmer growing environment.
Harvesting Roselle
Roselle generally takes several months to reach harvest. The exact timing depends on the climate, growing conditions and variety.
Harvest the fleshy red calyces once they have developed fully but before they become overly mature. Simply remove the calyces from the plant and separate them from the seed pods.
You can use fresh calyces in cooking and beverages, or dry them for later use. Dried Roselle calyces are particularly popular for making a deep-red herbal tea with a naturally tart and refreshing flavour.
Saving Roselle Seeds
If you want to save seeds for another growing season, leave some seed pods on the plant until they mature and dry.
Once the pods have dried, collect them carefully and remove the seeds. Store the seeds in a cool, dry place in a suitable airtight container until you are ready to sow them.
Growing Roselle in Cooler Climates
Roselle prefers a long, warm growing season, so it can be more challenging to grow in cooler regions. However, you can improve your chances of success by starting the seeds indoors.
Choose the warmest, sunniest position available in your garden. A sheltered spot near a north-facing wall can provide additional warmth and protection.
Container growing can also work well. A large container allows you to position the plant in the sunniest location and move it to a more sheltered area when temperatures drop.
Protect young plants from cold nights and frost. If a cold snap is expected, cover the plants overnight and remove the covering again in the morning.
Because cooler climates may provide a shorter growing season, start your Roselle Seeds early and give the plants as much warmth and sunlight as possible.
